Hematology is the study of blood and involves the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders that affect blood, bone marrow, and the immunologic, hemostatic and vascular systems.

Performing a complete blood cell count is a cornerstone of the equine wellness exam. The blood can provide a snapshot of overall health as well as guide the veterinarian to the source of a disease or performance issue. Blood can be evaluated to assess problems with clotting, look for the presence of certain cancers and identify infectious agents.
