Infectious Disease

Infectious diseases in horses are caused by pathogenic microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. They can affect an individual or large herd of horses leading to significant illness and sometimes death. Some of these diseases can also be spread to other species including humans.

Understanding how these organisms cause disease, how they are spread in a stable or at a competition, to how resistance develops to antimicrobials are some issues under investigation by our researchers. Finding answers to these and other questions will keep our equine herd healthy and provide insights into infectious diseases in humans as well.
